Glass-ceramics general characteristics

As a class of materials, glass-ceramics have the following general characteristics ... [Pg.883]

As a result of carefully controlled thermal treatment, the initial glass is converted into a polycrystalline material in which the final properties depend on the nature of the precipitated phases, the final degree of crystallinity, the size of the crystallites, etc. The material is generally opaque, although translucent and even transparent glass-ceramics have been produced. The small size of the grains and the absence of porosity are characteristics of glass-ceramics. These result in excellent mechanical properties. This is explained in part by the action of the microcrystal-... [Pg.459]

The leaching characteristics of the ceramic waste were compared with some vitrified waste forms under identical experimental conditions. The results are complex due to different leaching rates for various elements and the attack on the glass surface which results in the formation of a surface film which periodically sloughs off, however, some general comparison can he made. [Pg.146]

In this chapter, we define some important terms and parameters that are commonly used with fibers and fiber products such as yams, fabrics, etc., and then describe some general features of fibers and their products. These definitions, parameters, and features serve to characterize a variety of fibers and products made from them, excluding items such as fiber reinforced composites. These definitions and features are generally independent of fiber type, i.e. polymeric, metallic, glass or ceramic fibers. They depend on the geometry rather than any material characteristics. [Pg.8]
