Getting Married

More than any other event, a request to choose a wedding date can cause an astrologer to leaf frantically through the ephemeris in quest of the perfect day and then to throw her arms up in despair. Given the marriage statistics, it won t surprise you to hear that ideal days are hard to come by — and that even astrologers get divorced. 

certain celestial events improve your chances of making it past your paper anniversary. One of the most encouraging is a transit of Jupiter through your seventh house of marriage. The problem is that Jupiter only returns to your seventh house every twelve years, and you may not want to wait that long. 

Some astrological influences, on the other hand, occur fairly frequently and are worth waiting for. Here s what to look for when you name the day  

Choose the position of the Moon with care. A New Moon, with the Sun and the Moon conjunct, classically signals a new beginning. The best possible Moon for a wedding is a New Moon in your sign (or your partner s), in your seventh house of marriage, or in Libra. 

As an example, take a look at Nicole Kidman s chart in Chapter 3. She has Scorpio rising. So Taurus is on the cusp of her seventh house. Thus, if she were to get married a third time, she might want to do it after a New Moon in Taurus.

On a more philosophical or meta-physical level, one may suspect that free will and consciousness may have some quantum mechanical origin rooted in the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Perhaps at some neurological level an electron at a synapse exists in a superposition of two or more states that ultimately results in someone making some sort of decision. Should I run for President, or not Should I get married, or not . Perhaps there are two states with eigenvalues yes or no that asymptotically lead to very different actions. Does quantum theory enter into our decision making process Perhaps the brain itself acts as some sort of quantum computer taking... 

Mr. Wolfe had very sensibly advised me to make a settlement of a part of the estate, as against the event of my getting married and there was some stupid hitch about getting trustes.

The formula stating that a compound with n stereogenic centres has 2n 1 diastereoisomers has worked but not the formula that states there are 2 stereoisomers. In general, it s safer not to talk about stereoisomers but to talk first about diastereoisomers and then to assess each one for enantiomers. To say that a compound with two stereogenic centres has four stereoisomers is rather like saying that four hands are getting married . Two people are getting married, each with two hands. 

Premarital screening is practiced to determine the probability of a couple producing children with serious genetic conditions that can deprive the couple of a happy marriage by producing a hopelessly impaired child. Should a couple so informed not get married, marry but not have children, or conceive a child, but test the child in utero and abort if the child would have a serious genetic disease ... 

I think there is only one way to science—or to philosophy, for that matter to meet a problem, to see its beauty and fall in love with it to get married to it, and to live with it happily, till death do ye part—unless you should meet another and even more fascinating problem, or unless, indeed, you should obtain a solution. But even if you do obtain a solution, you may then discover, to your delight, the existence of a whole family of enchanting though perhaps difficult problem children for whose welfare you may work, with a purpose, to the end of your days. 

This question of marriage is undeniably a deterring factor in the employment of women scientists in industry. Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) was born on a farm in New Zealand. In 1895 he placed second in a scholarship competition to attend Cambridge University but was awarded the scholarship when the winner decided to stay home and get married. As a scientist in England, Rutherford did much of the early work on characterizing radioactivity. He named the a and /3 particles and the g ray and coined the term half-life to describe an important attribute of radioactive elements. His experiments on the behavior of a particles striking thin metal foils led him to postulate the nuclear atom. He also invented the name proton for the nucleus of the hydrogen atom. He received the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1908.
