In substoichiometric germanium oxides, Ge02 x, the insufficiency of oxygen atoms can result in the formation of oxygen-deficient defects. The most typical of these defects is the so-called E -center (-Ge=) defect, which can also be combined with OV located in its nearest neighborhood. The E -center and the E -OV combination exhibit peculiar optical properties considered in this subsection. [Pg.108]

For stacked junction solar cells, one would like to tailor the optical properties so that the active material in the first junction has a wide band gap, and the active layers in other junctions have progressively narrower band gaps (see Section 8). As mentioned earlier, either carbon or nitrogen alloying can be used to open the optical gap, while alloying with tin or germanium can reduce the optical gap. Representative optical data for undoped a-Si C H and a-Si Ge H films are shown in Fig. 2. [Pg.11]

Another potential application of fully converted polydiacetylenes is based upon their unusual non-linear optical properties. Sauteret et al. found that the third order susceptibilities of TCDU and TS increases by about a factor of 600 upon polymerization and become comparable to those of inorganic semiconductors like GaAs or germanium. This is a consequence of the increase of n-electron delocalization upon polymerization. Polymeric diacetylenes can therefore be used as efficient elements for third harmonic generation. In Ref. this effect has been employed for tripling the frequencies of 1.89 pm and 2.62 pm radiation. [Pg.43]
