In the Mongolian gerbil bilateral carotid occlusion model there was a substantial cell loss of 40-50%, measured in haematoxylin and eosin-stained section, 5 days post-insult (Stamford et al. 1999). Ascorbic add (500 mg per kg x day intraperi-toneally for S /z days, first dose 1 h before occlusion) caused significant striatal protection (cell loss reduced from 49 % to 20 %). After occlusion of the right carotid artery for 20 min, Hartmann et al. (1973) found enlarged mitochondria in the cytoplasm of the neurones of ipsilateral caudate nucleus. 

Recently, Moskowitz et al. (1984) have shown that 6-sulfidopeptide-containing leukotriene-like immunoreactivity is synthesized in gerbil forebrains after bilateral common carotid occlusion and reperfusion. No detectable activity was found in brain regions remote from the zone of ischaemia (forebrain) nor were cerebral arteries a major source of such leukotriene-like biosynthesis.
