However, when these materials are contained within a layer of geosynthetic fabric or mesh, a system can be created that provides greater structural integrity and both uniform and quantifiable flow rates and storage capacity. 

2 Geosynthetic functions in erosion and sediment control applications 

In aU of these functions, the geosynthetic is acting in one of two unique ways either it is actively controlling the dislodgement of soil, called erosion control, or it is intercepting and filtering the dislodged soil, called sediment, out of suspension once it has been transported by mnoff, called sediment control or sediment retention.

Industry-wide initiatives are well under way to promote the correct specification and use of geosynthetics in erosion and sediment control. This includes efforts to facilitate more comprehensive quality systems in manufacturing and better measurements of performance via new and better test methods.
