Geosynthetics for asphalts

Retardation of reflective cracking, when an overlay is to be constructed over an area with cracks, can be obtained by applying one of the following treatments (a) use of geosynthetics for asphalts, (b) use of stress-absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) and (c) use of fibre- [Pg.645]

The effectiveness of each treatment depends on the type/extent of cracking, workmanship at placement and daily traffic. All treatments may be applied on milled surfaces (the most usual case) or on existing pavement surface. [Pg.645]

From the wide range of geosynthetic products, the ones used in asphalt rehabilitation works are the geotextiles, geogrids and geocomposites, all able to sustain the high temperature of the asphalt during application. [Pg.645]

Geotextiles, non-woven textiles in particular, also known as paving fabrics, were the first to be used in asphalt paving. The original idea was for geotextiles to act as an asphalt reinforcement to improve the tensile properties of the asphalt and hence enhance asphalt tensile [Pg.645]

The use of geotextiles in conjunction with the bitumen layer sprayed also functions as an interlayer water barrier to the ingress of surface water and thus prevents or delays the deterioration of the pavement. [Pg.646]
