Abstract The well-known features of the Earth s crust are interpreted as the result of rock fracturing under deep thermodynamic conditions. For this aim, triaxial failure data are scaled up to the crust taking into account temperatures and rock types. The critical depth of hydraulically permeable cracks coincides with the Mohorovicic boundary and that relates to the crust genesis. The annihilation of a crack system at this depth is in accordance with seismic velocity jump known from geophysical exploration. The features of crust floors as well as total thickness, fault inclination, etc, are explained by the suggested mechanical approach. 

Altogether, there were about 164 structures and earthworks identified by the District of Columbia and the Corps of Engineers. However, only 53 POIs have been listed. Except for arsenic, only about a third have been sampled about two-thirds have had any geophysical exploration. Although some of these points encompassed more than one structure, many clearly have been omitted. Only recently has the district received a map locating most of these structures. Indeed, many of these structures have not been located on any map, supporting the author s initial recommendation that the entire 600 acres must be examined.

The shear wave velocity measurement in the field can be carried out either using borings or without borings. Seismic reflection and seismic refraction are staples of conventional geophysical exploration and can provide information on subsurface layer thickness and velocities of propagating waves without need for soil borings. 

A geophysical exploration may be included in a site investigation for an important engineering project in order to provide subsurface information over a large area at reasonable cost. 

The ability to form complex shapes with low-pressure laminates has been utilized in fabricating helium dewars to the optimum shape for specific applications, A typical example is the cryostat assembly of Fig. 6, which is intended for use as an airborne geophysical exploration device.Experience has shown that leakage problems are minimized when a wet layup is used with glass-cloth reinforcement of the epoxy. Attempts to fabricate dewars from preimpregnated tape with an autoclave cure have been less successful, probably because of the many internal joints that provide potential leak paths.
