Semiconductor materials have had to meet progressively more stringent requirements as the density and performance of semiconductor devices has increased. This trend will continue. The purity of the matoial, the dimensions of the devices, and the electrical properties require higher precision in their measurement and the ability to determine the device parameters to a resolution and sensitivity that pushes measurement techniques to their very limit. Semiconductor measurements cover a broad range of techniques and disciplines. After a brief listing of optical and physicall chemical characterization methods we give in this chapter a discussion of the general trend in electrical characterization and present a few examples of the charactmzation techniques used today. [Pg.10]

For the determination of the key process parameters and their respective values, fluorescence spectra from five 96-microreactor arrays were collected and processed. The normalized spectra are presented in Figure 5.7. The spectral features of the polymeric materials in the microreactors contain a wealth of information about the chemical properties of the materials that were extracted using PCA. According to the PCA results, the first two principal components (PCs) accounted for more than 95% of the spectral variation among all spectra. Thus the first two PCs were used for an adequate description of the fluorescence spectra. Results of the principal components analysis of the spectra from all 96-microreactor arrays as a function of catalyst concentration C are presented in Figure 5.8. The plot demonstrates the existence of the major general trend in the spectral descriptors where the variation in scores of both PCs strongly depends on concentration of component C for all screened process parameters. [Pg.106]

At present no microscopic theory exists which can answer questions like this, and there are few phenomenological descriptions either. What is badly needed is a common framework which will at least facilitate the development of incisive and informative phenomenological descriptions. I believe that polarizabilities can provide such a framework, and that they can be used to explain trends in chemical bonding and physical properties even when an absolute and rigorous connection is not demonstrated. For this to become so, however, it is necessary to understand the quantum mechanical meaning of polarizabilities in a more profound way than has generally been the case in the past. The story of how little this rather simple subject has been explored theoretically illustrates why it is that our understanding of the properties of materials is still at so primitive a level. [Pg.32]
