Gearbox results

An electric motor of efficiency 0.92 and a manual 1-speed transmission have been used for all the simulations. The transmission often constitutes a significant loss factor, and losses in using 5-speed or automatic transmissions (Cuddy, 1998) are higher than for the 1-speed gearbox. Because the actual Lupo 3L has n electronically operated automatic transmission with higher efficiency than the corresponding manual transmission, the 1-speed model was selected in order to avoid a distorting impact on the simulation results. 

The fixed ratio of the auger and mixer shaft speeds resulting from this type of construction is of a disadvantage, especially as this cannot subsequently be altered. There are however gearboxes with two-stage switch-gear, which allow the speeds to be changed. 

As we have already noted, this gearbox originally used steel ears. These were noisy and costly. They were made from case-hardened steel and there was chatter, especially when they became worn or damaged, resulting in wear on the back flanks of the teeth. They also required external lubrication, which can be a nuisance in an office environment.

It should be noted that if drier cakes will be obtained in the future with development of equipment, techniques or chemicals, the conveyor torque will increase. Reserve gearbox torque capacity will permit such improvement and also result in longer gearbox life. 

Torsional vibrations of the dynamic system consisting of bowl, conveyor and the friction between the conveyor and the product. This may result in metal fatigue and premature failure of gearboxes...
