Methods for measuring secretion were adequate by the 1920s, but satisfactory methods for measuring blood flow through the gastric mucosa were not developed until after midcentury. When methods were available and when clinicians learned how to use them, publication of papers on gastric blood flow and its relation to secretion and ulceration reached a flood that had not abated by 1975.

The results of this study thus provide no support for the frequently stated conclusion that gastric blood flow and secretion are closely related. Three secretory inhibitors produced the three possible effects on blood flow increase, decrease and no change. Two secretory excitants had different consequences an increase and no change.
