The heat usages of oil-fired shaft kilns can be quite low (1,100 to 1,250 kcal/kg), although where the gasifiers are water-cooled, the usage is about 10 % higher. 

The Si-SiO core-shell nanocomposite is prepared by a sol-gel method in combination with a subsequent heat-treatment process. At first, molten Si with high purity was irradiated by laser and gasified under an Ar atmosphere, and the condensed Si nanoparticles were collected on a water-cooled wall. Then, the obtained Si nanoparticles were dipped into a stirred tetraethylorthosilane (TEOS) sol, followed by the processes of pH adjustment, aging, drying, and heat treatment. Finally, a core-shell structured Si-SiO nanocomposite was synthesized. Because the Si-hydroxyl groups in the TEOS sol possess high activity, the silica gel can be easily adsorbed onto the surface of the Si nanoparticles. The hot raw gas leaving the gasifier is cooled by generation of high pressure steam. Fly ash is then hot/dry removed by ceramic filters. Tlie gas is then water scrubbed to remove ammonia and remaining trace solids. To assure high overall sulfur removal, the trace amounts of COS in the gas are converted to H2S by catalytic hydrolysis. The H2S is removed and converted to valuable by-product sulfur by conventional acid gas removal with Claus and tail gas treating.
