Gasifier Capacity

Normally, gasifier capacity is proportional to Vp.32 The pressure may be as high as 10 MPa in a GE gasification system. Also, the operating pressure is selected based on the purpose of the gas product in the ammonia industry, the operating pressure ranges from 8.5 to 10MPa, while in methanol industry, the pressure is 6-7 MPa. 

Gasifier Capacity. The BGL demonstration unit at Westfield operated at a bituminous coal feed rate of approximately 450 t/d (MAF basis). The dry gas generation rate varies from 1.4 to 1.5 million scf/h (37,000-40,000 Nm /h) with an energy content of 450-500 million Btu/h (HHV), depending on the hydrocarbon recycle rate and injection of coal fines/waste liquids in the tuyeres. Recent BGL gasifier designs have been based on 4 meter (13 foot) diameter with a bituminous coal feed rate of about 1,200 t/d.

In 1984, the Ube Ammonia Industry Co. began operating the largest Texaco coal gasification complex to date. This faciUty is located in Ube City, Japan, and has a rated gasification capacity of 1500 t/day of coal, and production capacity of 1000 t/day of ammonia. The plant has successfully gasified coals from Canada, AustraUa, South Africa, and China. At the present time the plant uses a mixture of petroleum coke and coal (43). 

Sasol Fischer-Tropsch Process. 1-Propanol is one of the products from Sasol s Fischer-Tropsch process (7). Coal (qv) is gasified ia Lurgi reactors to produce synthesis gas (H2/CO). After separation from gas Hquids and purification, the synthesis gas is fed iato the Sasol Synthol plant where it is entrained with a powdered iron-based catalyst within the fluid-bed reactors. The exothermic Fischer-Tropsch reaction produces a mixture of hydrocarbons (qv) and oxygenates. The condensation products from the process consist of hydrocarbon Hquids and an aqueous stream that contains a mixture of ketones (qv) and alcohols. The ketones and alcohols are recovered and most of the alcohols are used for the blending of high octane gasoline. Some of the alcohol streams are further purified by distillation to yield pure 1-propanol and ethanol ia a multiunit plant, which has a total capacity of 25,000-30,000 t/yr (see Coal conversion processes, gasification).
