A device commonly used to measure atmospheric pressure is the mercury barometer (Figure 5.1), first constructed by Evangelista Torricelli in the seventeenth century. This consists of a closed gas tube filled with mercury inverted over a pool of mercury. The pressure exerted by the mercury column exactly equals that of the atmosphere. Hence the height of the column is a measure of the atmospheric pressure. At or near sea level, it typically varies from 740 to 760 mm, depending on weather conditions. 

The gas tube has two advantages that may be of overriding importance in special cases. As Figure 1-1 shows, it is easy to vary the target metal so that an x-ray spectrum characteristic of a particular metal can often be generated as needed. Furthermore, spectral purity can be maintained because the risk of target contamination is small in a gas tube properly operated.

The hot combustion gases were directed through the heat exchanger tubes, and to this day FT boiler combustion gas tubes continue to be variously called fire tubes, smoke tubes, flue gas tubes (or simply tubes). 

The palladium-catalyzed Heck carbonylation reaction is a powerful means of generating amides, esters, and carboxylic acids from aryl halides or pseudohalides [28]. The development of rapid, reliable, and convenient procedures for the introduction of carbonyl groups is important for the development of high throughput chemistry in general and high-speed microwave-mediated chemistry in particular. Unfortunately, the traditional method of introducing carbon monoxide into a reaction mixture via a balloon or gas tube is not practical because of the special requirements of microwave synthesis.

Set up a gas generation bottle containing 100 grams of calcium hypochlorite (HTH) Attach the gas tube to an aerator placed in the bottom of a 250 ml flask of acetone (see drawing). 

In a 3-I. round-bottom flask are placed 1200 g. of bromine, 500 cc. of water, and 1500 g. of crushed ice. A fairly rapid stream of sulfur dioxide is allowed to pass from a pressure tank into the flask, the outlet of the gas-tube being placed below the surface of the bromine layer. The flow of sulfur dioxide is adjusted at such a rate that the gas is completely absorbed. About two hours will serve for the completion of the reduction, at which time the mixture will assume a yellow color which is not removed by further addition of sulfur dioxide, an excess of which is to be avoided. To prevent loss of gaseous hydrobromic acid, it is advisable to cool the mixture during the progress of the reduction. It is advisable also to agitate the mixture occasionally during the first stage of the reduction.

The useful screw-thread connector is becoming widely available. The simplest is the screw-capped adapter (Fig. 2.32) where the screw-capped joint is associated with a ground glass cone. The figure shows the silicone rubber ring and PTFE washer, and the adapter is useful for the insertion of gas tubes, thermometers or stirrer shafts. The screw-thread connection principle has been applied to the connection of water hoses to condensers and vacuum lines to Buchner flasks, to securing simple sealing septa to flasks, etc. 

Figure 4.10 shows a current waveform at a distribution panel supplying exclusively fluorescent lights. The waveform is primarily comprised of the third and the fifth harmonic frequencies. The individual current harmonic distortion makeup is provided in Table 4.2. The waveform also contains slight traces of even harmonics, especially of the higher frequency order. The current waveform is flat topped due to initiation of arc within the gas tube, which causes the voltage across the tube and the current to become essentially unchanged for a portion of each half of a cycle.
