When a bullet leaves the muzzle of a firearm there is recoil in the opposite direction to the travel of the bullet. Although the recoil is a nuisance it can be used to eject the spent cartridge case, load a live round of ammunition, and cock the mechanism. This can also be achieved by using some of the gas generated during discharge.

The gas generator is a small cartridge which contains an ignitable propellant material and an electrically fired ignitor or match. Figure 18.3 shows the four types of battery design. 

Special slow burning cool propellants can be used to generate gas under pressures suitable for the operation of mechanical devices. Perhaps the most important of these applications is in cartridge starting of jet engines for aircraft. The principles involved in this application of propellent explosives are illustrated in Fig. 19.7.
