In this concept there is no annulus gas, garter spring and calandria tube unifies with pressure tube. The main reason for this simplification is that the operating pressure of this system is atmospheric pressure and it has graphite moderator, which in case of leakage, there in no negative effect in the neutronic point of view and besides that the solubility of lead in the graphite is very low. [Pg.54]

Garter spring a helically coiled spring, typically made of carbon steel or stainless steel wire, formed into a ring, and used in a shaft seal to help maintain contact between the sealing lip and the shaft. [Pg.139]

Load actual pressure at a sealing face in the case of a shaft seal, the sum of the elastomeric lip s inherent beam force, the hoop force (as a result of lip stretch upon installation) and the garter spring tension, all of which contribute to shaft loading at the contact point. [Pg.140]

Spring-loaded used to describe a shaft seal that has a garter spring as part of its sealing lip. [Pg.142]

The lip-type oil seials used in this study are shown in Figure 1. They have a metal case embedded and a garter spring. Their case width is 12.5 mm and outer diameter is 72.0 mm. The bore diameter before Installation is 48.2 mm at room temperature, and after installation with a standardized shaft of 50 mm in diameter, the lip is given the interference of 1.8 mm in diameter. The contact band width b generated in contact with the shaft expands to 1.43 mm, and the radial load Pj. amounts to 326 N. [Pg.553]

Oil wiper packing. For oil-firee compression no trace of oil may be allowed to creep from the crankcase along the rod into the ( tinder. Triple wiper rings—equipped with garter springs— are well known and also used in labyrinth-type compressors for oxygen service. Each of the three rings is provided with an oil wiper lip. The collected oil is led back into the crankcase. See Pig. C-76. [Pg.224]
