That the washing steps removed membranes enriched in ganglioside sialylating system in relation to gangliosides was evident from the ratios of EAC and STA to gangliosides, which decreased from 0.78 and 0.70 to 0.08 and 0.15, respectively. 

The distribution of the ganglioside sialylating activity associated with the unwashed mitochondrial fractions was studied after they were disrupted hypoosmotically and the membranes separated by the density gradient procedure of Whittaker et al., (1964).
