Bovine brain gangliosides were oxidized by periodate ion and iV -2,4-dinitro-phenyl-L-2,4-diaminobutyric acid hydrazide was covalently attached to the aldehyde groups. The dinitrophenyl-labelled gangliosides were incorporated into mature thymocytes and these were incubated with rabbit anti-dinitrophenol and fluorescein-labelled anti-rabbit immunoglobulin G, causing uniform rings on the cell surface.
