The disaccharide derivatives 196 and 197 of N-tosyl-L-serine, of interest for the study of D-galactose-binding lectins, were prepared by Kaifu and Osawa148 from 194 and 195, respectively, by protection of 0-4 and -6 with a benzylidene group, condensation of the acetal with tetra-O-acetyl-a-D-galactopyranosyl bromide (110) under Koenigs-Knorr conditions, and deprotection.

Incomplete (N-linked) glycosylation prompts decreased in vivo activity due to more rapid hepatic clearance of the EPO molecule. Enzymatic removal of terminal sialic acid sugar residues from oligosaccharides exposes otherwise hidden galactose residues. These residues are then free to bind specific hepatic lectins, which promote EPO removal from the plasma. The reported plasma tm value for native EPO is 4-6 h. The tm for desialated EPO is 2 min. Comparison of native human EPO with its recombinant form produced in CHO cells reveals very similar glycosylation patterns. 

Recently, Kogel et al. (98) showed that the injection of galactosebinding lectins or the enzyme galactose oxidase into resistant wheat leaves prevented the hypersensitive cell death of penetrated host cells and concomitantly led to increased fungal growth, suggesting a causal relationship between hypersensitive cell death and resistance.
