There are large numbers of naturally occurring representatives, especially of pyrrole that include the important polypyrroles (porphyrins and corrins), and the nitropyrrole antibiotics such as pyr-rolomycins and pyrroxamycin. Derivatives of furan have been used as fungicides and A-vinylpyr-rolidone is an important monomer for the production of blood plasma extenders and for cosmetic applications. On account of the similarity in the pathways for the aerobic degradation of monocyclic furan, thiophene, and pyrrole, all of them are considered here. Anaerobic degradation of furans is discussed in Part 2 of this chapter. 

Although hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was used as an active component of insecticides and fungicides in the UK until the 1970s, its major source to the environment now is now as a by-product of industrial processes such as aluminium smelting and production of perchloroethylene and vinyl chloride monomer.65 The MAFF survey mentioned earlier did not include HCB, but a later survey on milk samples from farms around potential point sources did analyse for HCB. No HCB was detected at or above the reporting limit of 1 fig/ kg in whole milk in samples from either around potential point sources or control farms.66... 

Uses Allyl alcohol is used in the manufacture of allyl esters, as monomers and prepolymers for the manufacture of resins and plastics. It has large use in the preparation of pharmaceutical products, in organic synthesis, and as a fungicide and herbicide. Workers engaged in industries such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, allyl esters, organic chemicals, resins, war gas, and plasticizers are often exposed to this alcohol. 

Hormone synthesis can be altered by changes in the size and population of hormone producing cells, modification of the activity of hormone synthesizing enzymes, lack of precursors, or interference with enzyme cofactors such as divalent cations. Eor example, the fungicide fenarimol inhibits the enzyme aromatase, which converts testosterone to estrogen. Exposures to acrylamide monomer induce changes in the volume of cellular components in the thyroid... 

A further task was the construction of polymers from which a bound fungicide would not hydrolyze. Since aryl secondary alkyl ethers are only cleaved under vigorous conditions, we selected the vinyl ethers of fungicides 1-4 as target monomers.
