Functional pigments

The most widely used functional pigments are the corrosion-control pigments. These pigments inhibit the corrosion of steel. 

Uses. Metallic pigments are used to produce metallic or chrome effects and also as functional pigments (e.g., for corrosion protection, as conductive paints, or for protection against electromagnetic radiation). 

Particle design is presently a major development of supercritical fluids applications, mainly in the paint, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and specialty chemical industries [4CM-2]. The particle formation of functional pigments with biodegradable polymer has been successfully performed by gas-saturated solution (GSS) process using scC02 and PEG in a thermostatted stirred vessel [43]. The average diameter of the particles obtained by GSS at different conditions (40 and 50 °C, 10-30 MPa) is about 0.78-1.472 pm.

Finally, in the field of functional pigments such as corrosion inhibiting or optically variable types, the development of high performance types has been necessary. 

Further inspection of Table 1-1, ho vever, reveals a selection of high performance pigments classified according to their chemical composition. In particular, the families of complex (or mixed) metal oxides, and functional pigments shoiv a ivide variety in their chemical composition.
