This chapter deals with anodic oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons, olefins, and aromatic compounds. Substituted hydrocarbons are included, when the substituents strongly influence the reactivity. Anodic functional group interconversions (FGI) of the substituents are covered in Chapters 6, 8-10 and 15.

The construction of a synthetic tree by working backward from the target molecule (TM) is called retro synthetic analysis or antithesis. The symbol ==> signifies a reverse synthetic step and is called a transform. The main transforms are disconnections, or cleavage of C-C bonds, md functional group interconversions (FGI). 

We start with aromatic compounds because the bond to be disconnected is almost always the bond joining the aromatic ring to the rest of the molecule all we have to decide is when to make the disconnection and exactly which starting materials to use. We shall use the technical terms disconnection, functional group interconversion (FGI), and synthon in this chapter.
