Potassium fluoride [7789-23-3], KF, is the most frequently used of the alkaU metal fluorides, although reactivity of the alkaU fluorides is in the order CsF > RbF > KF > NaF > LiF (6). The preference for KF is based on cost and availabiUty traded off against relative reactivity. In its anhydrous form it can be used to convert alkyl haUdes and sulfonyl haUdes to the fluorides. The versatility makes it suitable for halogen exchange in various functional organic compounds like alcohols, acids and esters (7). For example, 2,2-difluoroethanol [359-13-7] can be made as shown in equation 9 and methyl difluoroacetate [433-53 ] as in equation 10. [Pg.267]

Hydrozirconation of various alkenylboranes [118-121] and alkenylzinc halides [34] with 1 provides the corresponding 1,1-bimetalloalkanes, which can be selectively converted to functionalized organic compounds [122-125]. Interestingly, alkenylzinc halides (RCH=CHZnX) show remarkable chemoselectivity, and functional groups such as chloride, cyanide, or ester functionality are tolerated [126]. [Pg.263]

Biomaterials are synthetic and naturally occurring materials that are foreign to the body but are used to replace a diseased organ or tissue or augment or assist a partially functioning organ or tissue. Cardiovascular, orthopedic, and dental applications are some of the most common areas in which biomaterials are employed. [Pg.226]

Enzymes have several remarkable catalytic properties such as high catalytic power and high selectivities under mild reaction conditions, as compared with those of chemical catalysts. In the field of organic synthesis, enzymes have often been employed as catalyst functional organic compounds were synthesized by the enzymatic selective reactions [1-5]. [Pg.239]
