Function argument data type

In every case, a function can use a cell reference as an argument, but the cell must contain a value of the correct data type. 

You can specify the data type of an argument passed to a Function procedure by using the As keyword in the Function statement. For example, if the Function procedure MolWt has two arguments, formula (a string) and decimals (an integer), then the statement... 

The differences between the InputBox function and the InputBox method are the following (i) default can be any data type and (ii) the additional argument type num specifies the data type of the return value. The values of type num and the corresponding data types are listed in Table 14-7. Values of type num can be added together. For example, to specify an input dialog box that would accept number or string values as input, use tiie value 1 + 2 = 3 for type num. 

If the X values in the data table are in descending order, the match type argument in the MATCH function must be changed to -1. 

The dashed box shown above now surrounds the column of data in cells D2-D10, which appear as arguments of the SUM function in cell D11 and in the formula bar. Note that Excel assumes that you want to add all of the numerical data above the active cell and automatically completes the formula. When you type [ J], the sum of the squares of the deviations appears in cell Dll. Since cells D8-D10 are blank, they contribute zero to the sum, and so there is no harm in leaving the references to D8-DI0 in the formula. Be aware, however, that references to blank cells could pose difficulty under certain circumstances. You can always resize the box to include only the data of interest. 

Look at the information that is provided in the window and in the formula bar. The SLOPEO function appears in the formula bar with no arguments, so we must select the data that Excel will use to determine the slope of the line. Now click on the selection button at the right end of the Known y s box, use the mouse to select cells C2 C6, and type [ J]. Similarly, click on the selection button for the Known x s box and select cells B2 B8 followed by [ J], which produces the following in the window. 

For more practical applications it is useful to determine internal standard chemical shifts (such as Si 2s) for reference zeohtes and to use these values for numerical charge correction without a flood gun for the more sensitive samples. Care must be taken as these internal standards depend on the type of zeolite and cannot be used as universal values such as often done with the C Is level. The data in Fig. 4 give an example of the spread of the position of standard lines. Several explanations have been given for these trends (cf. Part II). An interpretation based on a Madelung shift argument [8] has been recently substantiated by density-functional calculations [9] although the latter were vmdertaken on a basis that still includes some simplifications with respect to the true origins of chemical shifts (see below).
