Fulvicin - Griseofulvin

Griseofulvin Fulvicin, Grifulvin V) has been used safely and effectively for decades for dermatophyte infections of scalp and nails and for more widespread skin eruptions. However, infections in certain sites (e.g.. toenails) respond poorly. The drug is generally well tolerated, even in the long-term courses necessary for nail disease.

Griseofulvin (Fulvicin and Grisactin) is a fungistatic effective against various dermatophytes, including Microsporum, Epidermophyton, and Trichophyton, that produce diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. It exerts its effect by inhibiting fungal mitosis.

Systemic therapy is necessary for the treatment of tinea capitis. Oral griseofulvin (fulvicin V/F, P/G, others) has been the traditional medication for treatment of tinea capitis. Oral terbinafine is a safe and effective alternative to griseofulvin in treating tinea capitis in children. 

Micronized and ultramicronized powders are used to facilitate dissolution (Fulvicin u/f and GRIS-PEG, respectively). Griseofulvin has a in plasma of -1 day. The primary metabolite is 6-methylgriseofulvin.
