Fig. VI-4. Illustration of the surface force apparatus with the crossed-cylinder geometry shown as an inset. The surface separations are determined from the interference fringes from white light travelling vertically through the apparatus. At each separation, the force is determined from the deflection in the force measuring spring. For solution studies, the entire chamber is filled with liquid. (From Ref. 29.)... Fig. VI-4. Nonetheless, the syimnetric interferometer remains very useful, because there, the wavelengdis of fringes with even cliromatic order, N, strongly depend on the refractive index, n, of the central layer, whereas fringes with odd cliromatic order are almost insensitive to This lucky combhiation allows one to measure the thickness as well as the refractive index of a layer between the mica surfaces independently and siniultaneously [49]. [Pg.1734]

Partial reflections at the iimer optical interfaces of the interferometer lead to so-called secondary and tertiary fringe patterns as can be seen from figure B 1.20.4. These additional FECO patterns become clearly visible if the reflectivity of the silver mirrors is reduced. Methods for analysis of such secondary and tertiary FECO patterns were developed to extract infonnation about the topography of non-unifonn substrates [54]. [Pg.1735]

In the symmetric, three-layer interferometer, only even-order fringes are sensitive to refractive index and it is possible to obtain spectral infonnation of the confined film by comparison of the difierent intensities of odd-and even-order fringes. The absorption spectmm of tliin dye layers between mica was investigated by Muller and Machtle [M, M] using this method. [Pg.1735]

The adliesion and fiision mechanisms between bilayers have also been studied with the SEA [M, 100]. Kuhl et al [17] found that solutions of short-chained polymers (PEG) could produce a short-range depletion attraction between lipid bilayers, which clearly depends on the polymer concentration (fignre Bl.20.1 It. This depletion attraction was found to mduce a membrane fusion widiin 10 minutes that was observed, in real-time, using PECO fringes. There has been considerable progress in the preparation of fluid membranes to mimic natural conditions in the SEA [ ], which promises even more exciting discoveries in biologically relevant areas. [Pg.1742]

A term that is nearly synonymous with complex numbers or functions is their phase. The rising preoccupation with the wave function phase in the last few decades is beyond doubt, to the extent that the importance of phases has of late become comparable to that of the moduli. (We use Dirac s terminology [7], which writes a wave function by a set of coefficients, the amplitudes, each expressible in terms of its absolute value, its modulus, and its phase. ) There is a related growth of literatm e on interference effects, associated with Aharonov-Bohm and Berry phases [8-14], In parallel, one has witnessed in recent years a trend to construct selectively and to manipulate wave functions. The necessary techifiques to achieve these are also anchored in the phases of the wave function components. This bend is manifest in such diverse areas as coherent or squeezed states [15,16], elecbon bansport in mesoscopic systems [17], sculpting of Rydberg-atom wavepackets [18,19], repeated and nondemolition quantum measurements [20], wavepacket collapse [21], and quantum computations [22,23], Experimentally, the determination of phases frequently utilizes measurement of Ramsey fringes [24] or similar" methods [25]. [Pg.96]

Interference effects, which arise because of the extraordinary uniformity of thickness of the film over the spectrometer sample beam, superimposed on the absorption of incident light by parylene films, can be observed. Experimentally, a sinusoidal undulation of the baseline of the spectmm is seen, particularly in the spectral regions where there is Htde absorption by the sample. These so-called "interference fringe" excursions can amount to some... [Pg.438]

It should be possible to achieve greater penetration into a load material using the fringing field of a slow-wave than can be achieved by plane-wave propagation (68). There are, however, no reports of practical appHcation of these principles. [Pg.343]

However, labor costs, when considering all of the fringe benefits including Hberal vacations and retirement poHcies, make doing business in Europe expensive. [Pg.88]
