Of the common European breeds, milk from Jersey cows contains the highest level of fat and that from Holstein/Friesians the lowest (Figure 3.1). The data in Figure 3.1 also show the very wide range of fat content in individual-cow samples. [Pg.80]

Zero-grazing systems are often placed in urban or periurban areas, or in villages where land priority is a culture of cash crops and human food. Dairy cows are normally crossbred between local zebu or boran and exotic breeds like Holstein Friesian. [Pg.173]

In this review, attention is mainly given to the caseins derived from the Western breeds (e.g., Friesian, Holstein, and Ayrshire) of Bos taurus. Data on other species are included only when results for the cow are not available or are not as detailed or as well established. [Pg.65]

The breed of the cow, generally, does not appear to affect its propensity to produce spontaneous milk (Chilliard, 1982). For example, Chazal and Chilliard (1987a) found no difference between Friesian and Montbeliarde cows in relation to spontaneous lipolysis. Bachman et al. (1988), however, found that the milk of Jerseys is more susceptible than that of Holsteins. There also appears to be some within-breed heritability of spontaneous milk production (Deeth and Fitz-Gerald, 1976 Jurczak, 1996). [Pg.505]
