Al-Pb. Both lead [7439-92-1], Pb, and bismuth [7440-69-9], Bi, which form similar systems (Fig. 17), are added to aluminum alloys to promote machinabiHty by providing particles to act as chip breakers. The Al—Pb system has a monotectic reaction in which Al-rich Hquid freezes partially to soHd aluminum plus a Pb-rich Hquid. This Pb-rich Hquid does not freeze until the temperature has fallen to the eutectic temperature of 327°C. It should be noted that the modern view is that all partially miscible liquids should have both a lower and upper critical solution temperature so that all such systems really belong to one class. Ice formation is both beneficial and detrimental. Benefits, which include the strengthening of food stmctures and the removal of free moisture, are often outweighed by deleterious effects that ice crystal formation may have on plant cell walls in fmits and vegetable products preserved by freezing. Ice crystal formation can result in partial dehydration of the tissue surrounding the ice crystal and the freeze concentration of potential reactants. Ice crystals mechanically dismpt cell stmctures and increase the concentration of cell electrolytes which can result in the chemical denaturation of proteins. The freezing point diagram for the hydrazine—water system (Eig. 1) shows two low melting eutectics and a compound at 64 wt % hydrazine having a melting point of —51.6°C. The latter corresponds to hydrazine hydrate [7803-57-8] which has a 1 1 molar ratio of hydrazine to water. The anomalous behavior of certain physical properties such as viscosity and density at the hydrate composition indicates that the hydrate exists both in the Hquid as well as in the soHd phase. The absorption of SO for oleum production is carried out over a relatively narrow temperature range. The upper temperature is set to provide a reasonable partial pressure driving force for the oleum concentration used.
