Special local events were highlights of certain symposia. In Birmingham (1962) there was a visit to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford-on-Avon for a performance of Cymbeline-, in Sydney (1980) there was a concert in the famous Opera House, while in Milan (1996) the participants attended a moving concert in the Basilica San Marco. In Stockholm (1988) the banquet took place in the City Hall, the site of the Nobel Prize ceremonies, and there was also an organ concert, given by Bert Fraser-Reid, one of the symposium participants. The banquet in Madison (1972) included entertainment by a barbershop quartet. In Paris (1970) the banquet was held in the Berlioz and Opera Salon of the... [Pg.38]

The influence of the 4,6-O-benzylidene acetal in p-mannosylations was believed to be due to its torsional disarming effect. In an earlier work, Bert Fraser-Reid and coworkers found that a 4,6-O-benzylidene acetal locks the pyranose ring in a stable chair conformation [41], Therefore, it disfavors the formation of an intermediate oxocarbenium ion, which requires rehybridization and flattening of the sugar ring, usually leading to ahalf-chair conformation. This torsional effect, combined with the strong endo-mom nc effect in mannose, favors the a-triflate intermediate. [Pg.109]

Robert M. Giuliano was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania and attended Penn State (B.S. in chemistry) and the University of Virginia (Ph.D., under the direction of Francis Carey). Following postdoctoral studies with Bert Fraser-Reid at the University of Maryland, he joined the chemistry department faculty of Villanova University in 1982, where he is currently Professor. His research interests are in synthetic organic and carbohydrate chemistry, and in functionalized carbon nanomaterials. [Pg.1306]
