3 FRAGMENTATIONS YIELDING MULTIPLE BONDS BETWEEN CARBON AND A HETEROATOM 

Fragmentation reactions which give rise to multiple bonding between nitrogen atoms are exemplified by decompositions of aromatic diazohydroxides in acidic media to give aryl cations, nitrogen and water. Such reactions generally occur in two steps and the intermediate diazonium ion is well characterised by its electrophilic properties. 

The field of fragmentation reactions is obviously going to provide the physical organic chemist with abundant scope for investigation, since at the time of writing few mechanistic studies are available in this highly interesting field.
