We have discussed up to now various effects on detecting fractality at scales less than one micron. Lenormand has shown that one can characterize giant fractal structures (pm < < mn) by capillary condensation the fractal object is exposed to two immiscible liquids A and B and prefers A. When the grain is immersed in B at a depth h below A, it becomes surrounded by a cocoon of A (Fig. 9). One can also expose the fractal grain to an unsaturated vapor. For instance, the vapor may be taken at height h above a liquid reservoir (A = liq, B = vapor). [Pg.151]

Using refinement, you can model objects and interactions at all levels of granularity. This arrangement provides a fractal view of architecture, from the business roles and processes to large-grained interacting architectural components including a system to individual interfaces and classes. Any refinement has associated architectural decisions. [Pg.538]

Essential characteristics of fine-grained solids, such as the Fe oxides, include the specific surface area, the porosity and the fractal structure. The standard procedure for measuring these properties is the Brunauer-Em-met-Teller (BET) method (Gregg Sing, 1991) This depends on the fact... [Pg.49]

Thus, it is necessary to consider the role of the dust in the ISM. Dust comprises about 1% ofthe mass ofthe material in the ISM and can act as a surface upon which chemistry can occur (Fig. 4). Although we have yet to actually examine a piece of interstellar dust we believe it is similar to that found in the Solar System and recently collected by the Stardust mission. The dust is either carbonaceous or silicate in nature, comprising of small particles, typically sub-microns in size, probably with an irregular (fractal ) structure. Being so cold (around 10 K) the dust grains act as a depository for any gaseous molecules which "stick" to the surface. Hence H atoms may collide with the surface, and subsequent reaction between such H ... [Pg.73]
