Centrifugal Blowers These blowers have air or gases entering in the axial direction and being discharged in the radial direction. These blowers have three types of blades radial or straight blades, forward-curved blades, and backward-curved blades (Figs. 10-84 to 10-86).

Centrifugal A fan in which air enters the impeller with an axial direction substantially parallel to the radial plane. The impeller is defined as backward curved, inclined, radial, or forward curved depending on whether the outward direction of the blade at the periphery is backward, inclined, radial, or forward relative to the direction of the rotation.

Centrifugal fans are classified according to their blade geometry - radial, forward curved, backward curved, and air foil. The radial fan s major characteristic is its ability to compress gases to a higher pressure but delivers lower flow rates than the other fan types. Its characteristic curve is shown in Figure 5.6. Induced-draft fans handle hot, dusty combustion products. For this reason, extreme care must be used to choose units specifically designed for induced-draft service. The usual choice for large boilers is a centrifugal-type unit with forward- or backward-curved, or flat blades, depending on the type of gas handled.
