Whereas exercises are worked in a linear, forward-chaining, rational maimer, this model of problem-solving is cyclic, reflective, and might appear irrational because it differs from the approach a subject matter expert would take to the task. One limitation of Polya s model is the assumption that we begin by understanding the problem. The models proposed by Dewey and Wheatley presume that understanding the problem arises toward the end of the problem-solving process. [Pg.238]

The major limitations of the feed forward control strategy presented here are that (i) it is only as good as the fundamental data which are used in the models and (ii) it can only be used for systems which conform to the conventionally accepted mode of behaviour of free radical chain polymerisation in solution. However, the same approach can be used with the appropriate models for any copolymerisation process. The range of application can be increased by making an arbitary assessment of the parameters necessary for the control models and/or by introducing a feedback loop which incorporates some state measurement device, e.g., an in-line gas chromatograph for measurement of residual monomers concentrations. Three hazard analysis techniques are currently used widely Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis, and HAZOP. Variants that combine aspects of these three techniques, such as Cause-Consequence Analysis (combining top-down fault trees and forward analysis Event Trees) and Bowtie Analysis (combining forward and backward chaining techniques) are also sometimes used. Safeware and other basic textbooks contain more information about these techniques for those unfamiliar with them. FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) is sometimes used as a hazard analysis technique, but it is a bottom-up reliability analysis technique and has very limited applicability for safety analysis. [Pg.211]
