The first metal complex of quinuclidine (2) was reported in 1966. Ag(quinuclidine)2N03 was isolated as a white solid after reaction of quinuclidine and silver nitrate in acetonitrile for several days. The fonnation constants were determined in DMSO (Table 11). PULSE Radiolysis a pulse of ionizing radiation is used to create the reactant species. The ionizing radiation interacts with the solution, creating radicals, ions and excited states (Dorfman and Sauer 1986). The creation of reactants does not depend on the absorption coefficients because the ionizing radiation deposits its energy in the solvent and either the primary species are studied or the products of Ae reaction with the primary species are used. In the latter case, the rate of formation of the species to be studied depends on k, the rate constant with the primary species, and c, the concentration of the reactant species. As an example, in water one can study the reactions of the the primary species, H+, OH- and eaq or a product of their reactions. For example, if one wanted to measure C02 reactions, N2O can be added to the solution to react with e"aq to form OH in less than 10 ns. The OH reacts with added fonnate ions to form C02". [Pg.5]
