Folds syncline

Figure 17.3 Folds (syncline and anticline) are formed by the bending of rock formations. Faults are produced by rock formations moving vertically or laterally in respect to each other. Folds are features related to compressional, ductile deformation (Fig. 5.10). They form some of the largest reservoir structures known. A fold pair consists of anticline and syncline. [Pg.85]

The Novoveska Huta and surrounding area are part of the North Gemeric Syncline, which belongs to the Gemericum tectonic unit. The deposit itself is hosted in folded and faulted Permian age rocks. Active exploration in the area continues and is extending the limits of known mineralization. [Pg.473]

Figure 83 Different geologic and topographic conditions that can result in artesian groundwaters. Artesian conditions require that there be a confining bed and elevated heads elsewhere in a groundwater recharge zone, (a) Shows elements of a "classical artesian system within a syncline. Artesian wells are shown in (b) stabilized sand dunes, (c) crystalline rock, (d) folded and fractured sedimentary rocks, (e) flat-lying sedimentary rocks, and (f) glacial sediments. From S. N. This general structure, however, is affected by anticlinal and synclinal folds arranged in the direction of the Variscan orogeny (SW—NE) and is cut by SSE-NNW faults. [Pg.168]

The success of these comparisons is due to the particular type of water of this specific syncline of the folded Jura where the highly-acid running water, drained from bogs, changes to hard water when it passes through the underlying limestone. The importance of the soil for the chemical composition of the groundwater is underlined. [Pg.315]

Nittany Mountain is a synclinal mountain. It is cored with resistant sandstones, less resistant shales and siltstones. Tilted shale beds make up the lower, more gentle slopes of Nittany Mountain which stands more than 900 feet above the general upland surface of the valley. This upland is underlain by nearly 8000 feet of folded and faulted carbonate rocks which have been arched upward to form a... [Pg.260]

The coal mining field is broad and gentle fold which is composed by anticline NO.l, syncline N0.2, anticline N0.3 and N0.4 from west to east. Tectonic line direction is N60° 70°W, and turn... [Pg.1079]

Sikeshu coal mine in Wusu city is located in north tianshan eugeosyncline north-edge in the west piedmont depression of Urumqi mountain. It is a meso-cenozoic depression formed on the Paleozoic basement. Under yanshan movement and himalayan movement, piedmont depression of Urumqi mountain in the mesozoic strata form a series of fasciculation or minor axis fold, form kinds of anticline and syncline structures, mainly including Kerry Ackert—the four tree river anti-... [Pg.1128]

Comparison of these rates in 76, 77, and 78 shows that the presence of a P-synclinal oxygen atom accelerates the reaction by a factor of >200 another synclinal oxygen on the same carbon, as in 80, leads to a further 20-fold rate increase. An antiperiplanar oxygen, however, as in 74 and 75 increases the rate more than lO times relative to 77 and 78. Alternatively, if 74 and 75 are compared with 76, changing of the oxygen atom from the S3mclinal to the antiperiplanar orientation increases the rate by 71- and 95-fold. That this... [Pg.239]

Folds These are flexures formed when horizontal strata to fold upon compression as shown in Figure 2.14. The rising arches of the folded strata are called anticlines and depressed troughs are called synclines. On a large scale they give rise to domes and basins. [Pg.30]

Syncline A fold in rock in which the strata dip inward from both sides toward the axis the opposite of anticline. [Pg.804]

At the Uobregat mine, the potash beds are nearly horizontal (5° dip), with some folding, and are generally in the form of a large syncline. At Uobregat the beds are found over a 10-km area, and the depth to the beds varies from 300 to 400 m. [Pg.136]

XLZ field is located at the depth of Yanzhou synclinal, with gentle fold as the primary character, together with a certain amount of fracture structure, which geological structure belongs to the medium complex level. Sketch map of domain hydrogeology shows in Figure 1. [Pg.352]

Anticlinal and synclinal folds exposed in an open pit copper mine on the Zambian Copperbelt, southern Africa. (Fletcher Baylis/Photo Researchers, Inc.)... [Pg.558]

Syncline A fold of layered, sedimentary rocks whose core contains strati-graphically yoimger rocks the shape of the fold is generally concave upward. [Pg.419]

The situations when the molecular planes are tilted with respect to the layer normal, i.e., when fn is not perpendicular to k, are shown in the upper row of Figure 2-3. In the plane determined by the polarization P and the layer normal k (polar plane) this tilt is illustrated by a bar stuck to the end of the molecules which is closer to the observer. Depending on whether the tilt directions are parallel or antiparallel we can speak about synclinic and anticlinic situations. As mentioned above we will label them by the subscript S and A, respectively. Combining these different situations with the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric packing possibilities we have 4 different subphases SmC Ps, SmC PA SmCgPA and SmCAPs- Such a notation with some variations was introduced by Link et al. [6] and is widely used in the literature. Note that the SmCP layers have only a two-fold symmetry axis around p (C2 symmetry), i.e. they have the same symmetry as of chiral SmC materials [5]. [Pg.13]
