Fluorochem, Inc

Hexadecafluoro-l,12-dodecanediamine 2 was obtained from Fluorochem, Inc. (680 Ayon Ave., Azusa, CA 91702) and has a melting point of 109-111°C. All other reagents were used as received or purified by standard procedures. 

TNAZ (2.19) is also known as 1,3,3-trinitroazetidine (C3H4N406) and was first prepared in 1983 at Fluorochem Inc. It is reported to be more thermally stable than RDX but more reactive than HMX. Pure TNAZ is more shock sensitive than the explosives based on HMX but less sensitive than analogous PETN. It can be used as a castable explosive and as an ingredient in solid rocket and gun propellant. 

Diols la, lb and Ic, molecular weight 440, 540 and 660, respectively, were prepared at Fluorochem, Inc., Azusa, CA. We refer to the diols as C7-, C9-, and C,j-because these designations represent the average number of carbons bearing fluorines. HDI was MONDUR HX from Mobay Chemical. Diols was used as received HDI was distilled under vacuum before use.

Cobalt difluoride, used primarily for the manufacture of cobalt trifluoride, CoF, is available from Advance Research Chemicals, Inc., Aldrich Chemicals, and PCR in the United States, Fluorochem in the UK, and Schuhardt in Germany. The 1993 price varied from 60 to 200/kg depending on the quantity and the price of cobalt metal. C0F2 is shipped as a corrosive and toxic material in DOT-approved containers.

All anhydride and amine compounds were of the highest quality commercially available. Aniline (AN) was distilled imder reduced pressure phthalic anhydride (PA) was sublimed and stored under anhydrous conditions. High-quality NMP (BASF) was stored over molecular sieves. Trichloroethylene is used widely by industry as a metal degreaser. It is especially valuable because of its cleaning properties, low flammability, and lack of a measurable flash point. Trichloroethylene also is used as a chemical process intermediate in fluorochemical and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production. It has been used worldwide for more than 70 years. It is a colorless, volatile liquid, and is an unsaturated aliphatic halogenated hydrocarbon. In the United States, it is produced by The Dow Chemical Company and PPG Industries, Inc. In 1998, U.S. demand was about 171 million pounds (77,700 metric tons) of which about 15 million pounds (6,800 metric tons) were imported. About 84 million pounds (38,000 metric tons) were exported.
