Fluorine-oxygen-hydrogen system

The H2-F2-O2 system was investigated by Levy and Copeland at 122-162 °C. The O2 pressures were 85-500 torr and the H2 and F2 pressures were 20-80 torr. The total pressure was raised to approximately 645 torr by the addition of either N2 or He. The rate of F2 consumption decreased with the addition of O2 to a limiting value at about 100 torr of O2 as shown in Fig. 1. Above the limiting O2 pressure the rate law was [Pg.3]

Some aspects of the mechanism were discussed by Levy and Copeland, but a more detailed discussion was presented by Brokaw . The initiation must be [Pg.4]

Two possible chain sequences were considered by Levy and Copeland. The simplest is [Pg.4]

An alternative would be the same scheme but with reaction (11) replaced by [Pg.4]

The sequence considered by Brokaw included reactions (11)-(14) and the branching processes [Pg.5]

In most cases, the reaction of sulfur tetrafluoride with oxygen functions requires the presence of catalytic to molar amounts of hydrogen fluoride or Lewis acid type fluorides. Standard quality sulfur tetrafluoride, unless special precautions are taken, is unavoidably contaminated by trace amounts of hydrogen fluoride. The existence of ionic species SF3+ and HF2 in the SF4/HF system has been documented by spectral and conductometric investigations34 and there is evidence from vapor-pressure measurements of retardation of the reaction by coordination of hydrogen fluorine on the carbonyl oxygen.35... [Pg.325]

Cobalt Disilicide, CoSi2, results when cobalt is heated in the electric furnace with excess of silicon or with a mixture of copper silicide and silicon.8 It forms dark crystals, probably belonging to the cubic system density 5 3 hardness 4-5. Sulphur has no action on it, and oxygen at 1200° C. only effects a superficial oxidation. It incandesces in fluorine if gently wanned chlorine attacks it at 300° C., and bromine and iodine at dull red heat. Concentrated hydrogen... [Pg.72]

The AH° of reaction at 298.16° K. of oxygen difluoride with hydrogen was measured using a Parr fluorine combustion bomb modified to contain a metal ampoule employing a burst diaphragm. This modification permits heat of reaction measurements on systems where reaction occurs spontaneously upon mixing the reactants. The AH° of the reaction OFt - HtO + 2HF (infinite dilution) was found... [Pg.221]
