Contact and reaction under carefully controlled conditions with catalysis can now be effected smoothly [3], Gaseous hydrocarbons (town gas, methane) ignite in contact with fluorine, and mixtures with unsaturated hydrocarbons (ethylene, acetylene) may explode on exposure to sunlight.
