Eosin [15086-94-9] (tetrabromofluorescein), C2QHgBi40, made by the bromination of fluorescein, is both a dye and an adsorption indicator. Eosin Y /7 7372-87-17, C2QH Br40 2Na, the disodium salt, is a biological stain. 475 -Dibromofluorescein [596-03-2], C2QH2QBr20, is used in D C Orange No. [Pg.298]

Fluorescein is still made commercially by the Baeyer synthesis and is very useful because of its fluorescence properties. Called uranine as the disodium salt, it is a yellow dye of low tinctorial power. Commercial suppliers call the... [Pg.317]

Eosin Y stands for Eosin Yellowish and it is the disodium salt of tetrabromofluorescein. There are a number of other fluorescein derivatives which are also referred to as Eosins. Eosin B or bluish is 4,5-dibromo-3,7-dinitrofluorescein. The investigator is best advised to buy dyes on the basis of structure rather than name. In the case of the other dyes in the table the literature confusion is less imposing. [Pg.319]

FD C Red No. 3 is principally the monohydrate of 9-(o-carboxy-phenyl)-6-hydroxy-2,4,5,7-tetraiodo-3//-xanthen-3-one disodium salt, with smaller amounts of lower iodinated fluoresceins. [Pg.26]

A number of derivatives of fluorescein are useful dyes. Uranin is the disodium salt of fluorescein. ChrysoUn is a salt of benzyl-fluorescein, which is formed from phthalic anhydride and benzyl-resorcinol. It dyes silk and wool a fast yellow, and is used in cotton dyeing. Eosin is the disodium salt of tetrabromo-fluorescein, which is prepared by the action of bromine on fluorescein. Its dilute alkaline solution is rose-colored, and exhibits an intense yellow-green fluorescence. Other dyes related to fluorescein are tetrabromo-dichlorofluorescein and various ethers of fluorescein and its substitution-products. The dyes of this class produce on silk and wool shades from yellow to reddish yellow, cherry-red, and purple. [Pg.566]
