Non-catalytic reactions involving two phases are common in the mineral industry. Reactions such as the roasting of ores or the oxidation of solids are carried out on a massive scale but the rates of these processes are often controlled by physical, not chemical, effects. Reactant or product diffusion is the main rate controlling factor in many cases. As a result, mechanisms of reaction become models of reaction with consideration of factors such as external diffusion film control or the shrinking core yielding the various models. Matters are further complicated by considerations regarding particle shape and external fluid flow regimes. [Pg.57]

Laminar fluid flow regime in which inertial effects become negligible compared with frictional damping. [Pg.3088]

Negligible pressure gradient in the single-phase fluid flow regime. This allows us to modify the derivation of the fluid thermal energy balance by assuming constant pressure. [Pg.339]

There are a broad variety of method and equipment options for the continuous processing of fluids in pipelines to achieve objectives in mixing, dispersion, heat transfer, and reaction. The fluid flow regime is a main determinate for... [Pg.396]

As discussed in Section 8.1.5, the primary step for modeling the gas flow through nonwoven nanofiber mats is the establishment of a fluid flow regime. The fluid flow regime is determined by calculating the Knudson number (K ), which is defined as the ratio of gas-free mean path to nanofiber radius as expressed in Eqn (8.4). The values of K, in four different ranges, namely, ilCn < 10 , 10 < K < 0.25,0.25 < < 10,... [Pg.212]

Figure 3.19 shows the fluid flow regimes prevalent in different MEMS devices. It clearly demonstrates the limitation of the N-S equation for microscale flow modeling. It can be seen that most of the microsystems with gaseous flow works in the slip flow regime. Some flows inside microchannel, micropump, micronozzle, and microvalve operate in transitional regime. Free molecular flow is observed for Couette flow between hard disk and read-write head with a gap of about 100 nm. [Pg.81]

The buoyancy force ft, is independent of the fluid flow regime, whereas for higher Reynolds number conditions the drag force fa becomes a nonlinear function of the relative fluid particle velocity, for which empirical... [Pg.9]

In the following sections, a series of results benchmarking the silica DPD fluid properties will be presented. First, the value of the dissipative force term was determined by generating an appropriate calibration curve. Second, the fluid flow regime was determined by calculating the viscosity as a function of applied force, gj. Finally, the trend in viscosity as a function of temperature was calculated and compared directly against experimental trends. [Pg.339]
