Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for a variety of skin infections which require therapeutic approaches different from those of streptococcal infections. Staphylococcal celluhtis is indistinguishable clinically from streptococcal cellulitis and responds to cloxacillin or flucloxacillin, but generally fails to respond to penicillin owing to penicillinase (/3-lactamase) production. Staphylococcus aureus is an important cause of superficial, localized skin sepsis which varies ftom small pustules to boils and occasionally to a more deeply invasive, suppurative skin abscess known as a carbuncle. Antibiotics are generally not indicated for these conditions. Pustules and boils settle with antiseptic soaps or creams and often discharge spontaneously, whereas carbuncles frequently require surgical drainage. Staphylococcus aureus may also cause... [Pg.143]

In 1H- and 19F-NMR spectroscopy studies of the metabolites of fluclox-acillin (5.52) in rat urine, the presence of both (5R)- and (5.S )-flucloxacillin penicilloic acids was demonstrated [154], During the first collection period, the concentration of the (R)-epimer largely exceeded that of the f.S )-epimer. The (R)/(S) ratio then decreased progressively until an excess of f.S )-epimer was reached. These findings are in agreement with the hypothesis that the f.S )-cpimer is formed by epimerization in urine (see above) [152],... [Pg.228]

Antibacterial treatment is generally not required in cases of gastroenteritis. Typhoid fever is treated with ciprofloxacin (quinolone), cefotaxime (third generation cephalosporin) or chloramphenicol. Impetigo necessitates the systemic use of flucloxacillin or erythromycin. Topical fusidic acid or mupirocin may also be used. [Pg.41]

Flucloxacillin is a penicillin that must be taken either an hour before food or on an empty stomach for better absorption. [Pg.116]

Flucloxacillin is an oral beta-lactam penicillin, which is resistant to the enzyme beta-lactamase and is therefore indicated in infections caused by penicillin-resistant organisms. [Pg.251]

Staphylococcal strains which are able to produce beta-lactamase remain sensitive to the beta-lacta-mase-resistant penicillins such as cloxacillin and flucloxacillin. However the beta-lactamase-resistant penicillins appeared, at least in vitro, to be less active against those bacterial strains that are still penicillin-sensitive. [Pg.408]

Other analogs of cloxacillin are dicloxacillin and flucloxacillin. They are relatively less protein bound, however, dicloxacillin gives approximately double the blood level than cloxacillin. [Pg.319]

Flucloxacillin is a semi-synthetic compound in which an isoxazoiyi group prevents the bacteriai enzymes accessing the p-iactam ring. The spectrum of activity of fiucioxaciiiin is narrow and its main indication is staphyiococcai infection. [Pg.228]
