Flow-through experiment

Ten different adsorbents were chosen for the present evaluation. They include four types of adsorbents (1) inorganic activated alumina and bone char adsorbents, (2) macroporous cation exchange resins, (3) macroporous anion exchange resins, and (4) chelating heavy metal removal agents. Equilibrium adsorption of Pu(IV) from actual PFP wastewater spiked with a Pu tracer was measured for each of the adsorbents. The plutonium tracer was required because the activity of plutonium in the wastewater was too low to be measured conveniently. Those adsorbents that adsorbed plutonium strongly were then tested in column flow-through experiments and the rate of plutonium adsorption was measured.

The gas inlet tube has its end at the opposite edge of the cavity. Thus the stability of the resonance condition during the ESR work is not distorted and the inert gas atmosphere can be maintained during long term experiments. A continuous solution inlet is thus also possible and flow through experiments can be done using the electrolyte outlet.

To evaluate this hypothesis, experimentalists have been trying to provide data on mineral solubility and dissolution kinetics as a function of temperature, pH, and fluid composition. Experimental techniques and results of published studies are summarized below along with new data from our laboratory, including the results of pH-buffered, flow-through experiments that track variations in pore-fluid chemistry through time (Reed 1990 Reed and Hajash 1990, 1992 Franklin 1991 Franklin et al. 1990, 1991).

The selective hydrogenation of propyne to propene has been studied over porous ultraflltration polymeric membranes of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyetherimide (PEI) or polyamideimide (PAI) or over poly(acrylic acid) membranes, treated with palladium acetate. Similarly, porous PVDF membranes, also loaded with palladium particles, were used in hydrogenation flow-through experiments of methylenecyclohexane to methylcy-clohexanone. The hydrogenation of viscous liquids such as vegetable oils could also be performed in flow-through experiments over porous polymeric membranes loaded with palladium or platinum particles. " ...
