Flow movement electrokinetic effects

Flow movement also has a relationship with the electrokinetic phenomenon, which can promote or retard the motion of the fluid constituents. Electrokinetic effects can be described as when an electrical double layer exists at an interface between a mobile phase and a stationary phase. A relative movement of the two phases can be induced by applying an electric field and, conversely, an induced relative movement of the two will give rise to a measurable potential difference.33... [Pg.700]

There are four related electrokinetic phenomena which are generally defined as follows electrophoresis—the movement of a charged surface (i.e., suspended particle) relative to astationaiy hquid induced by an applied ectrical field, sedimentation potential— the electric field which is crested when charged particles move relative to a stationary hquid, electroosmosis—the movement of a liquid relative to a stationaiy charged surface (i.e., capiUaty wall), and streaming potential—the electric field which is created when liquid is made to flow relative to a stationary charged surface. The effects summarized by Eq. (22-26) form the basis of these electrokinetic phenomena. [Pg.2006]

In the presence of fluid flow exact analytical solutions of the full electrokinetic equations are rare. An exceptional situation arises when the applied electric field and streamlines of the flow are both in a direction of homogeneity along which there is no variation of any physical quantity. In such cases, the effect of the external influence (such as the applied field) is to produce motion such that all movement of charges are along surfaces of constant charge density and therefore the equilibrium charge density is not altered by the flow. Examples of such a situation are... [Pg.501]
