Florey, Howard Walter

Florey, Howard Walter (Baron Florey) (1898-1968) Austrahan pathologist who was the first to exploit the full potential of penicillin. In 1939, Florey and Ernst Chain began a research project to purify and test the mold extract that Alexander Fleming had discovered 11 years before. They isolated penicillin, and this led to large-scale production of the world s first antibiotic and saved millions of lives. Fleming, Florey, and Chain were awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.
