Gramicidin is a peptide antibiotic first isolated by Dubos in 19391 as a crude complex together with a second peptide antibiotic known as tyrocidin. The mixture of the two antibiotics was called tyrothricin. Although the mixture was discovered about ten years after penicillin2, tyrothricin was the first antibiotic utilized in clinical practice. 

The carbapenems (59) are a relatively new class of /3-lactam antibiotics first reported in 1976 (76MI51200). Three reactions which have been described for this class of compound... 

Our last and most extraordinary example is an antifungal antibiotic first synthesized in 1996 and containing no less than five cyclopropanes. It has the prosaic name FR-900848 but is known unofficially in the chemical world as jawsamycin .

The first report of an ansamycin antibiotic was the isolation of the rifomycin (the name rifomycin was changed into rifamycin subsequently) complex, and it was found later that rifamycin B (1) was the major product of this complex. Rifamycins are a family of antibiotics first isolated in the Lepetit Research Laboratories in 1957 [3]. 

Albomycins, natural siderophores and antibiotics first isolated from Streptomyces griseus and named grisein in 1947. Some years later, another microbial iron-transport compound, named albomycin, was isolated from Streptomyces subtropicus which had the same structure as grisein. In 1982, the structure of the albomycins was firmly established. The linear tripeptide built of N -acetyl-N -hydroxy-L-omithine is the hexadentate, octahedral ligand for ferric ion responsible for intraceUular transport of iron. The albomycins are used for treatment of iron metabolism disorders [G. Benz et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 1982, 21, 527 G. Benz, Liebigs Ann. Chem. 1984, 1408]. 

The cephamycins, a family of naturally occurring j8-lactam antibiotics first described in 1971, differ structurally from the cephalosporins in that they possess an a-methoxy-group at the 7-position. A fourth cephamycin, C-2801JT (3 a), has been isolated from two species of Streptomyces along with its close analogues cephamycins A and B, which have been previously described.
