The competition-winning design for the dome of Florence cathedral is idiosyncratic. Construction method became a central issue in the straitened circumstances of the city at war. Brunelleschi s proposal for an octagonal ribbed structure required no centering. The ribs supported a substantial lantern without undue spreading. 

The dome of St Peter s, completed in 1624 to the designs of Michelangelo Buonarroti (1495-1564), is a product of Gothic practice fully infiltrated by Renaissance ideals. Fully energized, I wandered through the Roman Coliseum, the ruins of Imperial Rome, the psychedelic Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona, the Piazza del Duomo in Florence, and the Notre-Dame de la Garde—a beautiful basilica set high atop the hills above the Old Harbor in Marseille.

They developed the typology and selected the sherds that we have analyzed.
