Flavonoids chloroplasts, effects

Effects of Phenolic Acids, Coumarins, and Flavonoids on Isolated Chloroplasts and Mitochondria... [Pg.247]

The objectives of the studies reported herein were to (a) compare the effects of a series of phenolic acids, coumarins, and flavonoids on whole chain electron transport and phosphorylation in Isolated plant chloroplasts and mitochondria and (b) identify specific sites of inhibition with polarographic and enzymatic techniques. Exploratory studies were conducted with the 20 compounds listed in Table I. The three glycosides are shown indented below the corresponding aglycones. Detailed studies were conducted with the six compounds, one representative member from each chemical family, designated with an asterisk. [Pg.248]

While the flavonoids suppress oxygen uptake in isolated mitochondria and oxygen evolution from chloroplasts, there has been too little work to establish these organelle effects as the only mechanisms of action. Flavonoids are known to protect membrane lipids against destructive reactions and, based on current evidence, these compounds do not readily fit the model of Figure 11.2. The flavonol rutin did not show an effect on soybean seedling water relations.64 It is... [Pg.243]

Certain flavonoids can interrupt the electron transport chain of respiration and photosynthesis (Amtzen et al., 1974). In chloroplast thylakoids, the primary effect was on the ATP-generating pathway. The flavonoids tested did not appear to be decouplers in mung bean mitochondria, the... [Pg.166]
