More recently, studies on the absorption of flavonoid glycosides typical of berries and grapes are reported. Lapidot et al. (1998) traced anthocyanins in human urine after the intake of 300 ml red wine, corresponding to 218 mg of anthocyanins. Totals of 1.5-5.1% of the anthocyanins were recovered in the urine within 12 h after wine consumption, two compounds were unchanged, whereas other compounds seemed to have undergone molecular modifications. Flavonoids can be considered as important constituents of the human diet—average consumption is estimated at approximately 1 g flavonoids per person per day, although the amount of absorbed flavonoids may be much lower. Flavonoid glycosides are poorly absorbed until undergoing hydrolysis by bacterial enzymes in the intestine, whereupon their aglycones can be absorbed. However, recent studies suggest a fair level of absorption of flavonol glycosides from the small intestine can also occur (Gee and Johnson 2001). 

The potential mechanisms of anthocyanin glycosides absorption in the small intestine may involve a specific glucose transporter, such as SGLTl, as previously suggested for the flavonoids [74].
