FLASH imaging methods

We thus decided to extend the Flash Profile method to the measurement of emotions, mental images and lifestyles associated with the smell of fragrances. Our goal was to tap into this imagery process on the motive side of the consumer in a manner that is meaningful to both the perfumer and marketing researchers (Ballay et al., 2006). 

The simplest instrument that finds extensive use is the strobotac which illuminates the object at varying frequencies. When the frequency of the strobotac flash coincides with that of bubble formation, the image of the bubble appears to be stationary. This method is evidently useful only when the system is transparent. 

In recent years there has been renewed interest in treating coal at high temperatures both by rapid processing in the more conventional type of carbonization apparatus (I) and by using such devices as flash tubes (5, 12, 13), lasers (13), arc image furnaces (9, 11), and plasma jets (3). All these methods produce conditions whereby the coal can be heated rapidly to a temperature well in excess of 1000°C. followed by quenching of the products. The work described here is an investigation into the reactions of coal in a plasma jet and has been reported briefly elsewhere (3).
