Flare stack sizing and pressure drop is included with considerations of pressure drop through the safety valve headers, blowdown drums, flare headers, seal drum, etc. Elevated flare tips incorporating various steam injection nozzle configurations are normally sized for a velocity of 120 m/s at maximum flow, as limited by excessive noise and the ability of manufacturers to design tips which will insure flame stability. This velocity is based on the inclusion of steam flow if injected internally, but the steam is not included if added through jets external to the main tip. [Pg.250]

A pipe that releases gas to disperse into the atmosphere is called a vent. If the gas is burned at the tip, it is called a flare. In its simplest form, a vent or flare tip is a pipe. Sometimes the pipe diameter is reduced for the last 5 ft or so to increase exit velocity for better mixing with the air. The operating pressure of the vent scrubber can be adjusted by reducing the tip diameter to increase pressure drop across the tip. A peak velocity through the flare end (tip) of as much as 0.5 mach is generally considered a peak, short term. A more normal steady state velocity of 0.2 mach is for normal conditions and prevents flare/lift off [58]. Smokeless (with steam injection) flare should be sized for conditions of operating smokelessly, which means vapor flow plus steam flow [33c]. Pressure drops across the tip of the flare have been used satisfactorily up to 2 psi.
