As an example of the chemical significance of the process technology, the products of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, in which a significant amount of gas phase polymerization occurs vary markedly from fixed bed operation to the fluidized bed. The fixed bed product contains a higher proportion of straight chain hydrocarbons, and the fluidized bed produces a larger proportion of branched chain compounds. 

The function of an immuno-electrode [28] containing a model antibody (Concanavalin A) fixed in a polymeric film on a platinum electrode is probably based on other effects than those utilized in ISEs. Immuno-electrodes suitable for direct determination of antibodies were prepared by fixing a conjugate of an ionophore and an immunogen (for example the compound of dibenzo-18-crown-6 with dinitrophenol) in a PVC membrane. This system responded to the antibody against dinitrophenol [52, 53]. 

Beginn developed Percec-type dendrimers, which are known to form supramolecu-lar channels, with polymerizable acrylate groups in order to obtain ion-permeable membranes [97-99]. First, the dendron 78 (Scheme 40) was dissolved in a polymerizable acrylate mixture that does not shrink on polymerization. The second step was the thermo-reversible gelation of the acrylate mixture, which was followed by the last step, polymerization to fix the supramolecular channel structure (Scheme 40). In the first experiments, compounds with only one polymerizable group were used but it turned out that the gelating properties were not sufficient [100, 101] so threefold modified 78 had to be developed. 

In spite of the presence of Nd-clusters, partial alkylation and micro heterogeneities the number of active Nd-species seems to be fairly constant during the course of a polymerization. Otherwise neither consistent polymerization kinetics (particularly lst-order monomer consumption up to high monomer conversion) nor linear increases of molar mass during the whole course of the polymerization would be observed in so many studies. It therefore can be concluded that the fraction of active Nd as well as the number of active catalyst species are fixed either at an early stage of the polymerization or even prior to initiation of the polymerization. It can be speculated whether the fixation of the number of active species occurs during catalyst prefor-mation/activation or even during the preparation of the Nd compound.
